Unlike the Gyro Captain in the movie Mad Max who was remembering lingerie, I’m talking about macrame. Do you remember macrame? Well get ready, because it’s making a HUGE comeback!
A friend just shared with me a photo from a popular home magazine that pictured macrame plant hangers – and all these memories came flooding back.
I remember back to elementary school and junior high school in the 1970s when we learned how to macrame in art class. I thought it was SO cool! Once I got the knots down, I remembering using masking tape to secure the cord to whatever table was available, and I’d start creating. I even remember a few times when there was no table around, holding the cord in my teeth while I worked those knots. I’m glad my Mom had lots of plants at the time, because I’m pretty sure I was making her a new hanging basket every day! Back then, my Mom worked at a fabric store that sold macrame cord. She brought home new cord for me on a regular basis (thank you Mom), and I was creating like crazy. I think it was the act of using nothing but my hands to create something that appealed to me so much. A few knots here and there and the finished product looked amazing! I never created the wall hangings that were so popular, I mostly stuck to plant hangers, bracelets and belts.
After seeing that photo in the magazine the other day, I’ve had the itch to get back to making plant hangers! Or bottle covers. Or vase covers. Or maybe I’ll make a few belts…
How about you? Did you ever have the macrame bug?

Yes, I do remember and I had all the stuff to make them! And now I’m wishing I had never sold it all at a garage sale too. Is’t that how it always goes. Thanks for the memories ThirdShift!
Whoa! That brought back some memories. Yes…I had three owl wall hangings that were macrame, several plant hangers and my favorite…a macrame table that hung from the ceiling. It was knotted in such a way to hold a thick round piece of glass. I thought it was beautiful.
