Every year, my family and I decorate our home for Christmas with a different “theme”. We enjoy coming up with ideas and working together to bring our vision to life.
Our themes are far from traditional Christmas decor! Last year was a snowball theme complete with an indoor blizzard – a real winter wonderland! The year before that we went industrial steampunk with a Rube Goldberg twist, and even had a marble run in clear tubes running all over our ceiling, then around the Christmas tree. Vintage gears and gadgets galore!
My Mom owned a nursery and landscape business for many years, and at Christmas she sold Christmas trees on her lot. She even flocked her own trees. We used to love to go to her lot to choose our Christmas tree each year with our boys – very special memories! This year, we’ve created a Christmas Tree Stand as our decor (Mom would have loved it).
When you first arrive, you’re greeted with three fresh Fraser Fir trees on our front patio. At night, the stand is lit up with old fashioned light strings.
Inside the service entry (which we tend to use much more than the main foyer) is a wagon that Mom gave to one of our boys when they were small. The trees in the wagon were the trees Mom gave to the boys one Christmas so they would have a tree for their bedrooms.
In the kitchen, we’ve hung mini Christmas trees from the ceiling with a “Cut yer own Christmas Tree” sign on each tree (we used to joke about the “yer” instead of “your” with Mom). Small gifts are hidden in the trees. When our family is here for Christmas, they’ll be able to “cut down” the tree of their choice as a gift.
The pendent lights have been turned into Christmas trees, complete with old fashioned lights. The trees look really cool when the pendent lights are on!
The diorama centerpiece for our table. I think I’ll put a photo of Mom’s smiling face inside the door window, what do you think?
Christmas trees in every corner – large and small!
Another wagon from Mom, complete with tree stand, signs, and old fashioned lights.
And the third wagon from Mom, with more trees, of course!
All the tree sale signs that Mom had at her nursery are long gone (sadly), so my husband painted a new sign for us.
With 44 trees now inside our house, they each needed a tag.
Vintage bottle brush trees on every window ledge, lit up by battery operated spot lights.
A small Christmas tree for all the kitchen window ledges.
Of course, no Christmas Tree Lot is complete without strings of lights. Lots of lights. The lights look especially magical at night!
Even our boys computers are in on the act with displays of Christmas trees.
Mom’s favorite Christmas trees were what she called her “Charlie Brown” trees. She had a soft spot for the trees that looked like they needed a bit more love. Here’s my favorite tree this year (thanks, Dad, for giving me this special tree).
I’ve hidden Christmas Crackers inside each Christmas tree. When our guests are here, each person will search the trees to find a Cracker. Inside the Crackers are numbered whistles that each person will use to follow along the music sheets to create Christmas music together. I think this will be a fun (and funny) way to celebrate Christmas with family!
We still have a few signs and lights to hang, along with a few finishing touches. I still have to make the snowy tree skirts for the trees. Oh, and the Christmas Tree pretzel rods. This has been a really fun theme to put together – soon we’ll be ready for guests!
From our indoor Christmas Tree Lot – we wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas!
What a special and memorable touch you have given to your theme this year! It is beautiful and fun at the same time…… enjoy!

JD – What a unique and very personal approach to your Christmas decorating. I especially liked the lights in the ceiling to look just like a tree lot. The idea of a gift in the boxes at the bottom of the small trees was great too! Loved the tree pendant lights too….heck!, I liked it all. I applaud your creativity. Thanks for sharing.
I’m late to the party but so glad I came across this! What a great idea and theme and so much fun! I hope your Christmas was all you wanted it to be. Love the salute to Mom!
